• DETECT: Developing activities to identify the occurrence of a cybersecurity event, including continuous security monitoring.

People ask me this question more than almost any other.

What cybersecurity actually teaches you

Most people think of cybersecurity as a technical discipline. And it is, but the technical part is not the most important part.

What cybersecurity actually teaches you is how to think about systems under adversarial conditions. You are not building for the best-case scenario. You are building for the moment someone is actively trying to break what you built, whether that someone is a bad actor from the outside, or a failure point you didn’t anticipate from the inside.

This changes how you design things fundamentally.

When I was working in cybersecurity, the thing I kept observing was that the companies that got it wrong, the ones that ended up breached, the ones that lost data they were entrusted to protect, almost never failed because someone outsmarted them technically. They failed because they made a structural decision early on that seemed fine at the time. A shortcut in the architecture. A compliance requirement treated as a checkbox rather than a principle. Security bolted on at the end because the budget ran out before they got to it.

The attack came later. But the vulnerability was built in from the beginning.

I carried that lesson with me into every venture after. You cannot secure a system that was not designed to be secure. You cannot make something trustworthy retrospectively. Trust is either in the architecture or it is not there at all.

What fintech confirmed

Fintech deepened the same understanding in a different context.

Financial data is sensitive in a way that most people understand immediately and personally. When you are building systems that touch people’s money, their savings, their transactions, their financial identity, you are operating with a level of consequence that does not allow for “we’ll fix it in the next sprint.”

What fintech added to the cybersecurity foundation was the regulatory dimension. Compliance in fintech is not optional, and it is not static. The frameworks evolve, the expectations shift, and the companies that treat compliance as a minimum bar rather than a design principle spend most of their time catching up. The companies that build compliance into their culture, that treat it as an expression of what they actually believe about how data should be handled, those are the ones that scale without crises.

I also learned something about trust that I don’t think you can learn without being close to financial services: institutions, real institutions, not startups playing institutional, extend trust to infrastructure, not to intentions. It does not matter how good your mission sounds in a pitch deck. If your data governance does not hold up to scrutiny, no serious health system, no serious hospital network, no serious government partner will sit across the table from you for long.

You earn institutional trust through institutional standards. That is the only way.

Why health data is the hardest version of this problem

Health data is, in my view, the most sensitive category of personal data that exists.

Financial data can be corrected. An account can be frozen, a transaction disputed, a credit record repaired. The consequences of financial data mismanagement are serious, but most of them are recoverable.

Health data carries a different weight. A person’s diagnosis, their medication history, their chronic conditions, this information can affect their employment, their insurance, their relationships, their safety in contexts that vary depending on where in the world they live. And unlike a compromised bank account, you cannot issue someone a new medical history.

The obligation that comes with health data is not just legal. It is ethical. It is, I would argue, one of the highest trust obligations that any organization can carry.

And yet health tech, especially in emerging markets, is full of ventures that are building fast and governance-light. Collecting data without clear frameworks for how it will be held, used, or protected. Optimizing for growth metrics in ways that treat data handling as a secondary concern.

This is not unique to Africa. But the stakes in the African context are particular, because the patients whose data is at stake are often in health systems with the least institutional protection, the least recourse, and the least historical experience of digital health infrastructure that was actually built for them and not extracted from them.

If you are going to ask those patients to trust a platform with their health data, the architecture has to be right. The governance has to be real. The standard has to be the highest available, not because a regulator is watching, but because the obligation is real whether anyone is watching or not.

Why this background is not a detour, it is the qualification

Here is what I want to say directly to anyone who has wondered whether my background is a mismatch for health tech:

The African healthcare system does not need another founder who learned health data governance after they started building. It needs founders who already understand what it means to be trusted with data that matters, and who built that understanding in fields where the consequences of getting it wrong were immediate and visible.

Cybersecurity and fintech are the hardest schools for data responsibility that exist outside of healthcare itself. I attended both of them before I started building Medlitics.

That means when we are designing the architecture for how Medlitics handles patient data, how it is stored, who can access it, what the governance framework looks like, how we think about security not as a feature but as a foundational design constraint, I am not learning these principles for the first time. I am applying them in a new domain, with the same non-negotiable standard.

What this means for Medlitics

Medlitics is building health analytics infrastructure for the African market. The work is about surfacing the data that has always existed in African health systems, in clinics, in patient records, in population patterns, and making it usable: for clinicians making decisions, for health systems understanding their patients, for the kind of analysis that leads to better outcomes at scale.

To do that work, we have to be trusted. Not just liked. Not just well-intentioned. Trusted, in the institutional sense, by the health systems and clinical partners we work with, and in the personal sense, by the patients whose data we are responsible for.

That trust has to be earned through standards. Not through marketing. Not through a mission statement. Through the way the system is actually built.

That is the only kind of trust that holds when something goes wrong, when there is a pressure to cut a corner, when there is a shortcut that would accelerate growth, when the architecture decision that seemed safe starts to show its limitations.

The answer to all of those moments is already in the foundation. Or it is not there at all.

Why now

The African healthtech space is significantly underinvested relative to the scale of the problem. That gap will close, not because someone decided it should, but because the economics and the need will force it.

The ventures that will define what African digital health looks like for the next generation are being built right now. The ones that will matter are not the ones moving fastest. They are the ones building with the right foundation, because in a sector this consequential, the shortcuts become the stories that end companies.

My career in cybersecurity gave me a mental model I now apply to everything:

The most dangerous vulnerabilities are the ones nobody wants to deal with.

The same is true in business. The most valuable companies aren’t the ones with the best UI. They are the ones that solved the infrastructure problem nobody else wanted to touch.

• Amazon didn’t win with product selection. They won with logistics.

• Stripe didn’t win with a pretty interface. They won with payment rails.

Any developer can build a marketplace in 3 months.

PayPal is an application. It sits on top of existing rails the banking system, credit card networks, and stable governments. In the US and Europe, those rails are old, but they work. In Africa, in many corridors, the rails are fragmented, expensive, or simply don't connect.

The $31 Billion Friction

Sending money from Nigeria to Kenya involves:

1. Converting NGN to USD (losing money on the spread).

2. Waiting 3-5 days for compliance checks (SWIFT system delays).

3. Converting USD to KES (losing money again).

4. Paying intermediary bank fees.

The result: The recipient gets ~$93. The $7 loss isn't a "service fee." It’s a tax on a broken system.

My Cybersecurity Lens

In my previous life, I looked for vulnerabilities. The biggest vulnerability in African commerce right now isn't hacking it's friction. Friction causes users to seek informal channels (like the parallel market) which exposes them to fraud. Friction kills businesses that operate on thin margins.

At 1APP, we aren't building a pretty interface and calling it a day. We are building the direct bridges between mobile money (M-Pesa), bank accounts, and wallets across 18 countries. We are standardizing the compliance layer so that a transaction doesn't have to stop in London or New York just to go from Lagos to Nairobi.

We are not solving a "tech problem."

We are solving an "infrastructure problem."

The app you see on the phone is just the tip of the iceberg. Underneath, we are moving mountains so you don't have to feel the weight.

The Vision:

Seamlessness. When you send money, you shouldn't feel the borders. You shouldn't feel the banks. You should just feel the connection.

December 2025.

That's when Matshepo Sehloho from Connecting Africa sat me down for a conversation that became "Hot startup of the month: Nigeria's Pashione."

Three months later, that feature is still the number one thing new people ask me about.

"How did that interview happen?" "What did they ask that didn't make the final cut?" "Looking back, would you change any answer?"

So today, I'm doing something I haven't done before.

I'm pulling back the curtain on that entire conversation the questions that made me think, the answers that still hold true, and the lessons that have emerged in the months since.

The Question Everyone Asked

"You're leaving cybersecurity... for fashion?

I lost count of how many times I heard that in 2023.

And I understood the confusion. On paper, it looked like a pivot. A hard one.

I had spent years in cybersecurity, e-commerce, and fintech. I understood threat modeling, compliance frameworks, and secure infrastructure. I spoke the language of GRC—Governance, Risk, and Compliance fluently.

Fashion? What did I know about fashion?

But here's what the question missed:

I wasn't leaving tech. I was redirecting it.

Because here's the truth I learned in those years building digital infrastructure: Technology is the ultimate enabler of scale and trust.

And African fashion a $31 billion industry rich with talent and cultural heritage was starving for both.

The $31 Billion Gap

Let me paint you a picture.

Across this continent, there are designers creating extraordinary work. We're talking world-class craftsmanship, fabrics that carry centuries of culture, designs that could hold their own in Milan or Paris or New York.

But ask them to sell globally, and the wheels fall off.

Fragmented markets. Complex cross-border customs. Inconsistent payment infrastructure. No reliable way to verify authenticity. No digital storefront that connects them to the global diaspora craving exactly what they make.

This isn't a small problem. It's a $31 billion problem.

And when I looked at it through my GRC-trained eyes, I didn't see fashion. I saw infrastructure gaps.

I saw security vulnerabilities in how payments moved across borders. I saw compliance nightmares in customs documentation. I saw risk everywhere but I also saw opportunity.

The same disciplines I used to secure digital infrastructure could be applied to build what I started calling "social commerce rail" for African fashion.

A platform that treats vendor verification with the rigor of a financial institution. That streamlines cross-border payments until they're almost seamless. That preserves the cultural narrative behind every piece while making it accessible to buyers anywhere in the world.

That platform became Pashione.

What We've Built So Far

Today, Pashione is more than a marketplace. We're a holistic digital ecosystem encompassing:

A storefront where vendors can showcase their work

A marketplace that connects them to global buyers

A creativity hub that educates and empowers

We operate across 18+ countries. We've onboarded over 950 vendors and brands. We're building the infrastructure that lets a designer in Lagos sell to a customer in London as easily as they'd sell to a neighbor.

And we're doing it by leaning into the very disciplines everyone thought I was leaving behind.

The GRC Advantage (The Part That Ages Well)

Here's what I told Matshepo that I'm most proud of because it's the part that's proven truest over time:

Most people miss that building in Africa isn't just logistically hard. It's structurally complex.

Cross-border payments break in ways they don't in more integrated markets. Customs regulations vary wildly from one country to the next. Trust the currency of e-commerce is harder to earn when buyers have been burned by counterfeits and failed deliveries.

This is where my background became our unfair advantage.

At Pashione, we approach vendor verification like a bank approaches KYC (Know Your Customer). We treat data security with the same rigor we'd apply to financial infrastructure. We build partnerships not because they look good, but because they're the only way to de-risk the business model at scale.

This is GRC thinking applied to e-commerce. And it's our moat.

Competitors can copy our features. They can't easily replicate the trust we're building because trust isn't a feature. It's a discipline.

Three months later, that's still the hill I'll die on.

What I Didn't Say in December

Because I wasn't ready to.

Matshepo asked about the future. Where is Pashione going? How do we scale from 950 vendors to 5,700 and beyond?

My answer then remains my answer now:

We build the rail. We deepen our strategic partnerships. We make the complex simple until buying African fashion online feels as natural and trustworthy as buying from anywhere else.

But here's what I held back in December:

Pashione is just one part of a larger vision.

There's Medlitics—our healthtech arm—because the same infrastructure challenges that plague fashion also plague healthcare. Fragmented systems. Trust deficits. Compliance nightmares. The GRC playbook applies there too.

And there's Fintech—where this entire journey began because none of this works without robust, compliant payment rails.

What I've Learned in the Three Months Since

A few things, actually.

1. Features are moments. Building is forever.

The week the article dropped, my DMs were full. Inquiries. Speaking requests. Partnership interest. It was exhilarating and exhausting. But by week two, the noise faded and there we were, still at our desks, still solving the same problems, still showing up. That's the part that matters.

2. Your story lands differently when you let it breathe.

I was so focused on getting the messaging right in December that I probably over-engineered some answers. Three months later, I read the feature more generously. It's honest. It's me. And that's enough.

3. The diaspora is hungry for this.

The response that moved me most came from Africans abroad people in London, Atlanta, Toronto who said: "I've been looking for a way to buy authentic African fashion without guessing if it's real. Thank you." That feedback fuels everything.

4. The hardest problem is still the hardest problem.

Logistics across 18+ countries hasn't magically solved itself. But we're further along than we were. And the GRC mindset means we're solving it in a way that scales not just patching holes.

But here’s the truth:

African fashion has never had a creativity problem.

From Lagos to Accra to Nairobi, designers are producing world-class work bold, intricate, story-driven pieces that carry generations inside their threads.

The diaspora demand has never been the issue either.

Millions of Africans living abroad want to stay connected to their culture through what they wear.

Weddings. Festivals. Naming ceremonies. Independence celebrations.

The demand is emotional. Deep. Consistent.

So why does it still feel difficult to buy directly from home?

Because creativity and demand don’t scale without infrastructure.

And infrastructure has been the missing piece.

 The Real Problem Was Never Fabric

That failed order revealed something bigger:

There was no trusted payment layer.

No reliable logistics coordination.

No accountability system.

No structured bridge between designer and diaspora buyer.

Just hope.

Hope that your payment would go through.

Hope that your item would ship.

Hope that it would arrive in time.

Hope is not infrastructure.

And fashion cannot scale on hope.

What 20 Years in Cybersecurity Taught Me

For two decades, I built and secured infrastructure across industries.

Oil and gas. Finance. Telecommunications.

Systems that moved billions.

Systems that had to work every time.

In cybersecurity, you learn one hard truth:

If the foundation is weak, everything collapses.

It doesn’t matter how beautiful the interface looks.

It doesn’t matter how strong the branding is.

If the system behind it fails, trust disappears.

And in commerce, trust is oxygen.

African fashion didn’t need better aesthetics.

It needed better systems.

Fashion Is Emotional. Infrastructure Is Invisible.

When someone buys a buba, an agbada, a kente set, or an adire piece, they are not just buying clothing.

But for that emotional exchange to happen globally, there has to be something unglamorous underneath:

Cross-border compliance.

Why I Left the “Safe” Career

In 2022, I stopped pretending the gap wasn’t mine to solve.

I had the technical background.

I had lived the frustration.

I understood both sides the diaspora buyer and the African creator.

So I left cybersecurity.

Not to “enter fashion.”

To build the bridge fashion was missing.

That distinction matters.

Because this isn’t about trends.

It’s about enabling an ecosystem.

When infrastructure improves:

Designers earn globally.

Buyers trust consistently.

Culture scales without dilution.

That’s bigger than clothes.

 Tuesday Reality Check

As you step into this week, here’s something founders especially those building in African markets — should consider:

Stop chasing what’s trending.

Start studying what’s broken.

The opportunity is often hiding in the inconvenience you’ve personally experienced.

The transaction that failed.

The system that felt unnecessarily hard.

The friction everyone complains about but tolerates.

That’s signal.

My $500 mistake wasn’t random.

It was data.

And data, when you sit with it long enough, becomes direction.
